Wider Opportunities evolved following the government's Wider Entitlement pledge that '...over time, all pupils in primary schools who wish to, will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument'. This has now been changed to Whole Class Instrumental and Vocal Tuition, however the basic principles remain the same.
These programmes should be
-taught in whole classes as part of the weekly curriculum
-free to pupils
-delivered in partnership
-part of an integrated, holistic musical approach
The Aspirations Document states that this should be an extended programme with a minimum of a year. Hillingdon Music Service delivers these programmes in several schools in the borough. Highly qualified, experienced instrumental teachers deliver this exciting project and it is tailored to each school's individual needs.
